Lake Forest’s Island Oasis
Le Polynesia Cultural & Performing Arts Center

Posted by Kathy Ochiai on May 16, 2011 | Patch.com

Something unexpected is in the air at this industrial complex in Lake Forest.

The sound of traditional Tahitian instruments floats over the cars parked in front of Le Polynesia Cultural and Performing Arts Center.

Half a dozen men sit by the concrete building, concentrating as they play several intertwining rhythms on their To’ere and Pahu drums. The sounds seem to greet the visitor and bid welcome.

A transformation from the industrial to the tropical occurs when a visitor walks through the doors of Le Polynesia studio. A few dozen people of various ages are singing Pacific Island songs, playing instruments and laughing in the room, which is lined with grass mats, bamboo and tapa cloth.

RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA – Island Cupcakes brought a bit of the islands to Rancho Santa Margarita Saturday afternoon during its grand opening celebration.

Island Cupcakes, run by Cindy Hashimoto and Raymond Hoff, opened in December.

Le Polynesia Halau/Hula School students performed in front of the bakery, at 30622 Santa Margarita Pkwy., for visitors to watch. The students performed popular hula dances from islands around the world. Lori Lei Montgomery, the lead dance instructor, also performed a special solo dance for the crowd. There were also Hawaiian drummers.

Towards the end of the celebration, Le Polynesia students invited guests to learn some basic hula dance moves.

The lifting sound of holiday hula music fills the Le Polynesia Cultural & Performing Arts Center in Lake Forest, where several girls around the age of 5 have gathered for their weekly dance class.

Lori Montgomery, instructor and co-owner of the studio, makes her rounds. Her group just held its annual Ho’ike in September and prepare for the usual end-of-the-year shows soon to follow.

Lori is constantly inspired by her mentors in Hawaii and Tahiti, and says the studio is gearing up for an exciting 2010.
